Scholars Stories - IOI Foundation

Lim Wan Wan is a Yayasan TSLSC scholar from the batch of 2012. She enjoys travelling, snorkelling and reading fictional books during her past time. Wan Wan is a triple dean’s list recipient during her studies at Multimedia University and was the club treasurer of MMU Buddhist Society. She is currently serving the company under IOI Palm Biotech Sdn Bhd, conducting tissue culture clonal propagation from IOI’s state-of-the-art Tissue Culture Laboratory at IOI Palm Biotech Centre.

Our team caught up with Wan Wan to find out what she’s been up to since joining the Group. Here’s our chat with her.

How did you benefit from the Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng Scholarship?

By having the scholarship, I can focus on my studies without worrying about my tuition fees in university. Besides that, I have a chance to gain working experience and knowledge in IOI while serving my bond.

How would you describe your role in IOI Group?

Working in IOI enables me to be independent in making decisions as well as have hands-on experience in oil palm research. Among my daily tasks are the ongoing research of new technologies in studying the genome of oil palm, study the nutrient requirement of oil palm tissue cultures, study genome and markers used in oil palm breeding as well as how to apply my bioinformatics knowledge in my work.

What do you like most about the job?

What I like most about my job is that I get to meet different people from different areas of study and have a chance to work with them. In the meantime, I get to broaden my knowledge in many aspects in order to be on par with them. It also gives me the chance to keep challenging myself to achieve a higher goal.

Things you can’t live without?

The things I can’t live without are my family and books. My family is always there to support and love me. With them being there for me, I feel like I can get through any obstacles in life. As for the other thing I can’t live without, maybe to many people, a love for books is unusual, but to me I think that reading a book can expand ones creativity besides gaining knowledge and it helps to clear the mind after a hectic day of work.
