Denise is a Yayasan TSLSC scholarship recipient hailing from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. She crossed over to Peninsular Malaysia for her higher education studies, where she completed her degree in Real Estate Management at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). Denise received the Dean’s List award every year throughout her studies, successfully graduating with First-Class Honours.
As well as excelling in her studies, Denise was involved in various extra-curricular activities. She was involved in UTHM’s yearly orientation week, Minggu Haluan Siswa (MHS), where she served as a facilitator and mentor for new intake students. She was also her class representative for Realtors Club, a committee formed by the real estate management students within the faculty to encourage involvement of students, lecturers & university in improving the degree program. In addition, Denise held positions in Foreign Language (Spanish) and Tennis, where she was involved in organising a foreign language event and tennis tournament in the university for public schools to participate in.
Denise has a knack for arts and music; hoping to watch a musical live one day. She loves having meaningful conversations with people, it could be anything from current issues to daily life stories, as it helps her open her perspective to matters. During her downtime, Denise enjoys taking short getaways to travel as she believes that quality time spent alone allows her to function better in the long run.
Our team caught up with Denise to find out what she’s been up to since joining the Group. Here’s our chat with her.
How did you benefit from the Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng Scholarship?
By securing this scholarship, it boosted my motivation to not only pursue my goals academically but also to develop myself in a more balance manner by being equally active in extra-curricular activities. The scholarship has too been a financial aid for me by covering my tuition fees and monthly living expenses throughout my tertiary education.
Before the completion of my degree, I had the privilege to be attached with IOI Properties for my industrial training. This has allowed me to ease myself into the role and responsibility of a working personnel from a student.
How would you describe your role in IOI Group?
In general, I would describe my role in IOI Group is to be a team player that is reliable, resourceful and have a growth mindset. As a fresh graduate, I only have a minimal experience in the working industry. However, that gives me the sense of urgency to learn the necessary skills to carry out the tasks assigned to me. Besides that, being the person who holds the values that IOI Group was built upon is another role that I proudly embrace.
What do you like most about the job?
Being in the leasing team, I love the variety that it provides. Every day is different and I get to interact with such a diverse group of people. It means that I am always learning!
My current job pushes me out of my comfort zone to deal with matters that I would frequently avoid if possible. But with a right mindset & attitude, I now see this as a rewarding opportunity to equip myself better.
Life Slogan
I studied in a semi-national secondary school back in Sabah. The motto of the school was “Quod facimus id perficimus” which translates to “What we do we carry through” in Latin. This is the mentality that I carry with me no matter what I am facing. That is to bring into completion what is given to me in life.
Things you can’t live without?
God, family and friends, my journal and a good internet connection!
