When Second-Hand Is Better Than New

31 Mar 2023Berita IOI
Shop second-hand or buy a new item? Buying second-hand not only benefits our wallet, it increases the life cycle of the product. The students at Sunway University College (Sunway) and those at Universiti Malaya (UM) could not agree more. They found it a welcoming delight to buy pre-loved items at a steal at our Bargain Basement booths, which displayed various brand new and second-hand items – clothes, jewelleries and books to electronic devices, soft toys and more – that were all in excellent condition and affordably priced.
On 2 and 3 March 2023, our Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng (Yayasan TSLSC) team set up a booth in a night market-style event at Sunway’s Good Tavern.

There were many other social enterprises such as Biji-biji & Me.reka, Dual Blessing, Greater Action, Stand Pie Me, Kneading Peace and SANS Beauty, which were all invited by the Sunway Social Innovators Club. The students were eager buyers and interested in our Bargain Basement concept.

On 18 March 2023, we were invited to participate at the Young Engineers Section (YES) Open Day 2023 at UM by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia and Engineering Society of UM, which received an overwhelming crowd of around 1,000 participants, including students, undergraduates and postgraduates from various disciplines, as well as individuals from various universities.
Even our Yayasan scholars came to support us, Cliff Bryan, who is in his second year of Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at UM, dropped by our booth at UM and bought a soft toy.

It was a great opportunity to promote our Yayasan TSLSC’s Scholarship Programme, which will be open for applications to Bachelor’s Degree students in April 2023. We donated the proceeds from our two outings to various charities.
