Education

It is our belief that learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. With that in mind, Yayasan TSLSC dedicates itself to the advancement of human capital by providing scholarships and financial assistance to underprivileged students. The foundation supports initiatives that enhance student’s capabilities as potential leaders who can work equally with their brains and their hearts.

Scholarship Awards
Scholarship Awards

Since 1998, Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng has awarded more than RM7.7 million to over 300 students. Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng aims to encourage, support and invest in higher education for qualified Malaysian youth, contributing towards the nurturing of talent in the country.

We have been offering scholarships to academically outstanding students pursuing full-time undergraduate studies in local institutions of higher learning in Malaysia.

While pursuing their respective courses, the scholars undergo practical training or internships related to their future job. Upon graduation, they are provided with career opportunities within the IOI Group, gaining professional experience and enhancing their skills in leading a global corporation.

We seek to attract talent with leadership qualities. If you feel confident enough, we would love to meet you. To apply for our scholarship and know more about our scholars, read more here.

Student Adoption Programme
Student Adoption Programme

Our Student Adoption Programme ("Program Bantuan Pelajar") was officially launched by the Deputy Education Minister in 2008 to provide underprivileged students with equal access to basic education. Since its inception, we have successfully adopted over 1,000 students from 204 schools within the vicinity of IOI’s plantation and property development projects. To date, the disbursed value is RM4,800,000.

Under this programme, qualified needy adopted students will receive a school bag and cash assistance of RM1,000 for primary students and RM1,200 for secondary school students each year. By supporting and monitoring their educational needs, the foundation hopes to motivate them to excel in their studies along with easing the financial burden of their families.

Young Achiever Awards
Young Achiever Awards

Initiated in 1999, The Young Achievers Awards was introduced to invigorate and motivate children of IOI employees in striving for excellence in their studies. Cash awards, plaques and certificates of achievement are given out in an annual ceremony to reward the outstanding academic results and active curricular participation of the student recipients. In this annual event, young achievers and parents get together for a ceremony of recognition, gratitude and the pursuit of constant improvement where motivational talks are also held to develop and engage the award recipients towards continuously striving and excelling in future undertakings.

To date, Yayasan has given RM624,885 worth of cash prizes to approximately 1,626 young achievers in recognising their spirit of excellence. This award serves as a platform in celebrating the positive achievements of students and in inspiring them to value the importance of education.

IOI-STEM
IOI-STEM

STEM is more than just an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM is a skill or a philosophy in a way. STEM is an approach and a way of thinking for educators – and, to a certain extent, parents – to help students integrate knowledge across subjects by incorporating flipped learning and encouraging them to think in a more logical and holistic way in order to be equipped with 21st century skills.

The subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics is where students learn the skills to gather and study information (investigative skills of science), evaluate and make sense of information (analytical skills of mathematics) and determine how the information can solve a problem (inventive skills of engineering) using the technology available to them today.

Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng is a keen supporter of the integration of STEM into students’ education. Read more here on our initiatives to promote STEM.

Building of Schools
Building of Schools

Our educational assistance includes the funding of schools in the construction of new buildings in accommodating a more comfortable study environment for the students. SJK(C) Shin Cheng (formerly SJK(C) Harcroft) is our very own funded school situated in our township of Bandar Puchong Jaya. The school has 3 blocks including a science lab, library, music room, a basketball court and a multipurpose hall which accommodates 1,980 students and 89 teachers. We have also funded, amongst other schools, a substantial part of the new block and hostel in Kuen Cheng High School. We have disbursed nearly RM23 million to the building of schools since 2000.

MCII
Malaysian Collective Impact Initiative (MCII)

Education has often been touted as the key to breaking out of poverty in impoverished nations and tertiary education is now a necessity in developed economies. It is not uncommon to come across parents emphasizing to their children the importance of a good education as a stepping stone to career success. The Malaysian government provides free education at the primary and secondary level yet Malaysia still falls below the OECD average in PISA tests.

The World Bank’s Malaysia Economic Monitor in 2014 found that it is imperative to make productive, long-term investments in high quality basic education (starting at pre-school) for all Malaysian children to close educational – and income – gaps2.

In 2015, 11 organisations in Malaysia, decided to voluntarily form the Malaysian Collective Impact Initiative (MCII). Members of MCII include British Council, Credit Suisse, Hap Seng Group, Hong Leong Foundation, IOI Group, Petrosains, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad, Thoughts In Gear, Westports Malaysia and YTL Foundation. Agensi Innovasi Malaysia (AIM) through their Social PPP Fund were instrumental partners during set-up and programme launch phase. SOLS24/7 – an award winning humanitarian organization joined as a member in 2016.

Through partnering schools, MCII identifies their needs and expands interventions to the ecosystem that surrounds the school and that impacts on student achievement. After a successful pilot programme with two secondary schools in Klang, the collective network now includes 14 schools, 39 members/partners and 19 supporting organizations bringing in to date an in-school investment value worth over RM830,000.

MCII recently joined forces with a new partner – Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah (PPD) or School District Office. PPD spokesperson: “We are excited about the work that MCII has done as a pioneer educational collective impact initiative in Malaysia. We look forward to our collaboration with MCII which will add towards strengthening and improving the literacy levels and aspirations for every child.”

MCII is actively recruiting new members and aligning school and community needs with programmes and organisations to facilitate the creation of a sustainable and replicable collective impact model for Malaysia and the region.
